It is a great honour to be invited to be patron of the Martin Read Foundation. I have clear, cherished memories of Martin as both a fine composer and an inspiring teacher.

The Foundation is a brilliant initiative since it serves to support and encourage young composers at a crucial time in their development, not least by enabling them to hear performances of their music and to meet others who share their passion for writing and making music.

Many thanks for your kind invitation. I look forward to hearing more about MRF’s activities.

I recalled this week that a teacher from somewhere south had written to me, saying that he and family had been cycling round the Lake (Bregenz) and had visited the opera house. I think possibly he sent me a poster to sign to put up in the school/college - I can recall a big cardboard tube arriving in the post! I thought at the time, what a generous thing to do, making friendly contact like that. So it seems now very appropriate that I should be a part of this wonderful initiative in his memory.

Martin Read Foundation invites composers aged between 14 and 17 to register to be selected for it's annual composers' scheme.  Selected composers are commissioned to write a new piece for workshop and performance by the ensemble in residence at the annual MRF Concert and  / or Festival of Contemporary Music. Financial awards are made to support young composers’ development through tuition by MRF's associated composers, as well as performance and recording opportunities.
